Rep. Nicole Macri tapped as “Emerging Leader”

OLYMPIA – The Milbank Memorial Fund and the Reforming State Group have selected state Rep. Nicole Macri to participate in the 2017-18 Emerging Leaders Program. The Fund, established in 1905, designed the program to help legislators gain skills and policy tools that are essential to advocating for healthy communities.

Participants from a wide variety of backgrounds are accepted in to this program every two years, including legislators and executive branch officials with experience in medicine, law, and finance. Macri (D-43rd, Seattle), a first-year lawmaker who serves as vice-chair of the House Healthcare and Wellness Committee, will join other participants from across the country and political spectrum to learn techniques for achieving the shared goal of improving the health of the communities they serve.

The intensive program involves in-person gatherings and online meetings during the coming year.  Macri and other participants will learn the how and why of effective community health policies. The program will offer training in strategies for leadership and advocacy; offer tips on understanding how to use evidence and research-based information to inform policy making; and emphasize the role that education, income and the environment play in creating healthy populations.

“I’m grateful for this recognition,” Macri said, “and eager to learn how to be of greater service to the people of our state.  I’m looking forward to our first meeting in September.”
