The Senate Republican Budget and Helping College Students

Video Update on the Senate Republican Budget

We’ve known all along that the Senate Republican budget proposal would rely on cuts that harm many people in our state, including children and families. As expected, the budget that Senate Republicans released on Tuesday shows little regard for people who are struggling in our state. Many of the cuts they make are not just harmful to kids, families, and communities; they are shortsighted and would end up costing our state more in the long run.

The state’s budget isn’t just numbers, it’s a statement of our values. The spending decisions we make as a legislature have real impact on people like you and me, especially the most vulnerable among us. The Senate Republican budget proposal, like the budget proposed by President Trump, lacks the values of this Washington and the values of our district.

You can read more about the Republican budget proposal in this blog post from House Appropriations Chair Timm Ormsby.

House Democrats are finalizing our budget proposal this week and we will introduce a budget that represents our shared values by helping working families, fully funding K-12 schools, continuing to fix our mental health system, closing the opportunity gap, and supporting at-risk youth.

As the process continues, I will remain a staunch advocate for the people and values of the 36th District. Look for an update from me next week on our proposal. In the mean time, I have included a video I recorded earlier this week discussing the Senate Republican budget proposal.

Podcast on Improving the College Experience

Last week I recorded a podcast with students Maresa Miranda and Anna Nepomuceno. Maresa is the Director of Legislative Affairs for the Associated Students of Washington State University-Vancouver; Anna is the Legislative Liaison for the Associated Students of the University of Washington-Tacoma. We discussed efforts to reduce college expenses (HB 1561) and make transferring schools easier for students with disabilities (HB 2037). I have included a link to the podcast we recorded. It’s only 15 minutes long. I hope you’ll check it out and consider subscribing to the Capitol Ideas Podcast!
