48th District Legislative Update

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Serving as your State Representative is an incredible honor, and I want to express my gratitude for the opportunity to advocate for you in Olympia.

Like many in our community, I have navigated life as a renter, a user of public transit, and a graduate of the Lake Washington School District and University of Washington. Taking my experiences having grown up in the district with the stories that many neighbors have shared with me, I have committed to advocating for a government that reflects the needs of all our residents.

Rep. Salahuddin introduced HR 4666, recognizing the life of UW goalkeeper Mia Hamant, who passed due to cancer. Here, the UW women’s soccer team celebrated and remembered her memory. This year’s legislative session came as Washington families faced rising costs and deep federal uncertainty. That is why affordability was at the center of our work to reduce pressure on working families and small businesses. I am proud to have led on the following policies that reflect our community’s shared values:

  • Expanding property tax relief for seniors, people with disabilities, and disabled veterans by increasing eligibility thresholds and exemptions (SB 6162). This change is expected to make roughly 30,000 more Washington residents eligible for the program, helping more people stay in their homes and communities.
  • Preventing misuse of personal data (SB 6002) by limiting access to automated license plate reader data and clearly defining how state agencies may access, operate, and use these systems.
  • Supporting those impacted by immigration actions (HB 2411) by modifying the state’s employer shared leave bank program to allow its use for victims of hate crimes and for absences related to immigration enforcement actions affecting the employee or their relatives.
  • Reducing barriers to building affordable housing (HB 1859) by lowering the number of affordable units required to qualify for a density bonus for housing developed on property owned by religious organizations.

Despite budget challenges, we prioritized stability by protecting investments in food, shelter, education, and health care, while making targeted decisions to support families. A full list of Capital Budget investments can be found here, and Transportation Budget investments can be found here.

This session was full of many wins, and I’m proud to have sponsored seven bills that were signed into law by the Governor in the short 60-day session. Along with a few of the bills above, I also introduced and passed HB 2320, HB 2248, HB 2249, and HB 1604. Above all else, my focus remains on fighting for the needs of all our communities in the 48th District and across Washington.
