Wildfire Resilience & Consumer Protections: 2026 Session

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

The 2026 legislative session is officially underway, and it’s an honor to be back in Olympia serving the 45th District. Every year, the first order of business is to address the challenges facing families, workers, and communities across Washington — from protecting our environment to strengthening consumer protections and ensuring that our state’s laws work for everyone.

opening day

Here’s a snapshot of legislation I’m proud to be working on this session:

🌲 Supporting Wildfire Mitigation — HB 2089

This session I’m co-sponsoring House Bill 2089, also known as the Wildfire Alleviation Support Act, with Rep. Shaun Scott and colleagues. This bill would support wildfire mitigation efforts by modifying Washington’s tax code to generate dedicated funding for fire preparedness, response, forest restoration, and community resilience. It would adjust the Business & Occupation (B&O) tax treatment for certain loan interest income, closing a loophole currently enjoyed by big banks, and is projected to devote roughly $40 million annually to wildfire mitigation work statewide. These resources are critical as we prepare for increasingly severe wildfire seasons and seek to protect our communities and landscapes.

📧 Strengthening Truth in Advertising — HB 2274

In today’s digital economy, misleading advertising can harm consumers and small businesses alike. I’m proud to sponsor House Bill 2274, which updates the Washington Commercial Electronic Mail Act to modernize standards around deceptive email marketing. The bill clarifies and strengthens rules on misleading subject lines and transmission practices, provides meaningful statutory remedies for affected individuals and businesses, and aligns the law with contemporary digital communications to protect Washington consumers.
