Be aware of, and wary of, wildfire smoke

The convergence of two “seasons” makes today prime time to go over a few health and safety reminders. We’re in the middle of peak the camping time, of course, and we also see media notices every day that, sadly, this is also peak wildfire time.

Wildfire smoke is a particular health concern. Older adults and youngsters, as well as folks with asthma, bronchitis and heart diseases should stay particularly vigilant in guarding against smoky air with its harmful particles and toxic chemicals.

Planning ahead is always sound advice. Before you venture into any region around wildfire country, check the air-quality reports made available by the state Department of Ecology (DOE). More than 70 locations in 27 of Washington’s 39 counties are monitored for air pollution by the DOE and other agencies.

Excellent suggestions are offered by the state Department of Health (DOH) to help homeowners, visitors, campers and other people prepare for wildfires. You should also always be cognizant of any drinking-water problems that might arise as a result of a wildfire or some other unexpected disaster.
