Rep. Riccelli challenges local reporter to join him in Bloomsday run

State Representative Marcus Riccelli (D-Spokane) has made a New Year’s resolution to sign up for the annual Bloomsday Run in an effort to promote healthier living, and is hoping to have some company from a recent critic when he does so.

“Today, the first day of the new year, I am committing to running Bloomsday in 2014 and am challenging Spokesman-Review reporter Jonathan Brunt to do the same,” said Riccelli.

After the 2013 Bloomsday run Spokesman-Review reporter Jonathan Brunt published a blog post noting the lack of participation from elected officials from the 3rd legislative district. This year Riccelli, who last ran Bloomsday in 2012, is hoping for better engagement on both sides.

“A reporter’s diet and exercise regimen is almost as bad as a politician’s,” joked Riccelli. “I think that both of us can set a good example for our colleagues and the public by participating in Bloomsday.

Last year Councilmember Amber Waldref had the fastest time among area elected officials at 1:07:39. Riccelli hopes to beat that time.

“Everyone wins when people have active lifestyles, and I hope that this will draw extra attention to people living healthier as diabetes and obesity epidemics continue to sweep our nation,” explained Riccelli. He added, “I very much look forward to hearing from Mr. Brunt as to whether or not he will accept my challenge.”

Riccelli was recently chosen by his colleagues to serve as the new Vice Chair of the House Healthcare and Wellness Committee. Promoting healthy living, both through legislation and by example, has been a top priority for him since assuming office last year. Riccelli was the 2013 organizer of bi-partisan legislative basketball in Olympia, and is drafting legislation to help public schools provide healthier food options to students.
