Federal budget cuts could hit close to home

Textbooks (2)Have you been wondering how “sequestration” might affect us here at home? Unless Congress takes action soon, federal sequestration budget cuts will take effect March 1. While programs like Social Security, Medicare, and the military will largely remain unaffected, many other programs will likely take a hit. I asked the State Librarian how much he depends on the federal budget to support our public libraries. Here’s his response:

As we cut subsidies for services offered by local libraries, those libraries will either pick up the cost of the service, or these services will be lost. Subsidies support statewide databases, statewide digital reference, and a statewide catalog. Our Talking Book & Braille service and services to the Institutionalized (prisoners) would also be cut in proportion to the federal funding they receive. We anticipate a loss of about $278,236 through sequestration in federal Library Services and Technology Act funds.

We all know that libraries aren’t the only things that benefit from federal funds. All our public institutions – from schools to parks, hospitals to housing agencies and so much more – will be hit hard by sequestration. So write to our representatives in Washington, D.C., and tell them we’re paying attention.

Here’s an article from CNN that shows how sequestration could impact other programs like unemployment benefits, food prices, and child care.
