OLYMPIA—Derek Stanford was sworn in yesterday as the new state representative for the 1st Legislative District.
“I’m ready to get to work on the tough problems facing us: getting the economy moving, improving public education, and constructing a budget that stays within our means but reflects our values,” Stanford said.
The new representative replaces Al O’Brien, who retired after 14 years of service in the Washington State House of Representatives. O’Brien said that Stanford’s background as a statistician who analyzes facts and solves problems is needed in Olympia.
Stanford, who received his PhD in Statistics from the University of Washington, currently serves as the Director of Analytics at a local telecommunications firm. He has served in similar capacities at other companies, and he spent four years running his own small business as a statistical consultant.
Stanford lives with his wife and daughter in Bothell. He has served as a board member for several nonprofit groups, including Washington Public Campaigns and the Washington Alliance of Technology Workers.
“I am honored to be serving the people of the 1st District and to be their advocate in Olympia,” Stanford said.
Stanford will serve as vice chair of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee and is also a member of the Business & Financial Services Committee and the Education Appropriations & Oversight Committee.
The 1st Legislative District includes Bothell, Mountlake Terrace, Brier and parts of unincorporated Snohomish and King Counties.
