HR 4613: Day of Remembrance

Watch my floor speech recognizing the Day of Remembrance

Sunday, February 19th, marked the seventy-fifth anniversary of the signing of Executive Order 9066 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt resulting in the incarceration of over 12,000 Japanese-Americans in Washington state.

On Wednesday of that week, my Japanese American great-uncles’ 48-star flag was flown above the Capitol. They brought this flag home from their base camp in Italy after serving in World War II. They all belonged to the 442nd Regimental Infantry, the most highly decorated infantry in U.S. history.

It was an honor to celebrate my history with friends, family, legislators, and the people of Washington on the House floor.
