OLYMPIA – Rep. Kristine Reeves, D-Federal Way, was elected to serve as deputy majority whip by members of the House Democratic Caucus on Thursday, January 17.
“Our state has made historic strides in electing a more representative group of public servants to the state legislature than ever before. In my new role as deputy majority whip, I am committed to making sure every member of this organization feels their voice is heard,” said Reeves. “I want to ensure that the policies and solutions coming out of our state capital are putting people first, and ultimately reflecting our increasingly diverse communities.”
Whips are charged with finding the level of support for legislation, amendments and budgets. They also determine which bills are ready for a full vote by the House. Rep. Mike Chapman, D-Port Angeles, will also serve as deputy majority whip.
In addition to her service as deputy majority whip, Reeves will serve on the House Committee on Housing, Community Development and Veterans. Reeves, who experienced homelessness as a teenager, plans to address housing affordability and insecurity along with homelessness. As a long-time veteran’s advocate, Reeves will also help shape caucus efforts to ensure veterans and their families gain access to their earned services and benefits
Reeves will return as Vice Chair on the Consumer Protection and Business Committee for her second term, and act as the new Vice Chair on Commerce and Gaming.
“As a working mom, economic developer and long-time veteran’s advocate, I am honored to have the chance to serve my neighbors on these committees,” Reeves said. “As I return for my second term, I am honored to continue fighting for the hard-working families in the South Sound.”
