Task force says reparations may be needed as state works toward environmental justice
As they prepare for the next legislative session, state lawmakers are reviewing a report that calls for laws to ensure environmental justice. Elimination of joint Pierce County health department moved closer to reality Monday
A bill to dissolve the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department passed through committee Monday morning and will head to a vote of the full Pierce County Council. The move comes in the final days before a Democratic majority replaces the current Republican majority on the County Council. Voters flipped the legislative body blue for the first time in 17 years in November. ‘Extreme stress’: Inmates at state’s first prison to face an outbreak watch cases surge again
COVID-19 cases are spiking in several Washington prisons, with hundreds of new cases reported over the past week. People incarcerated at Monroe Correctional Complex, now bracing for a second outbreak, are still reeling from the first. Donna Leroy’s boyfriend is one of 66 inmates who have tested positive for coronavirus in Monroe since the pandemic began. While he sat in isolation during his quarantine in July, Leroy said her boyfriend did not receive a shower for 10 days. Continue reading at The Spokesman-Review. (Ellen M. Banner)
