A year after George Floyd’s murder, what’s changed in Washington state?
When George Floyd called for his mother with his dying breaths, the police officers holding him down didn’t seem to notice — but the rest of the world heard him loud and clear. Black people had been saying for decades that deep racism and violence exists in American policing. On May 25, 2020, that violence became something others could no longer ignore. Bringing broadband to all homes
The past year in pandemic has proved that broadband access is a necessity, not a luxury. Despite a flurry of federal, state, local and volunteer efforts, thousands of Washingtonians still don’t have reliable access to high-speed internet service. Farmworker organizing in Washington is undoing discriminatory labor policies
In central Washington’s fertile Yakima Valley, workers at apple-processing warehouses led wildcat strikes last May and June, ultimately winning the right to form workers’ committees, obtain better personal protective equipment and earn higher wages. In November, dairy workers won a Washington State Supreme Court case that forced their employers to pay them for overtime work. Federal and state law exempt agricultural workers from certain labor protections, creating a vulnerable class of workers in an industry that depends on minority and migrant labor.
