Rep. Natasha Hill Honors Dr. King’s Legacy, Calls for Action on Economic and Racial Justice

OLYMPIA – Today, Representative Natasha Hill (D-Spokane) delivered a powerful speech on the House floor, urging lawmakers to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through bold, direct action to combat racial and economic inequality. As she moved the resolution recognizing Dr. King’s profound impact, Rep. Hill reminded colleagues that Dr. King’s teachings demand more than words—they demand action.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that,” Rep. Hill quoted Dr. King, emphasizing the enduring relevance of his philosophy of nonviolent resistance. She underscored the need for strong, direct, nonviolent action to counter state-sanctioned violence against lawful protests. Rep. Hill also shared Dr. King’s warning that increased violence in America’s streets could lead to “a rightist takeover of our government and a fascist state in America.” She cautioned that while this did not happen then, it must not happen now.

Rep. Hill’s speech comes as Washington celebrates a historic milestone: the state legislature’s Black Caucus is now the largest on the West Coast, with a record number of Black legislators. “In this chamber, I don’t face water cannons, police dogs, or imprisonment,” she said. “I see microphones and voting buttons. It is our duty to use them to uplift all communities.”

Dr. King’s vision of justice extended beyond racial equality to economic justice—a fight Rep. Hill said is far from over. She highlighted the urgent need to address systemic inequities in education, housing, and the economy. “Too many people are working two jobs just to pay the rent. Too many are drowning in student loan and medical debt. Too many are being left behind,” said Rep. Hill. “We cannot honor Dr. King’s legacy by ignoring his call to action.”

The resolution and Rep. Hill’s speech highlight the legislature’s commitment to addressing these challenges. From Snoqualmie to Spokane, Rep. Hill urged her colleagues to prioritize policies that expand opportunities for everyone—particularly for individuals who are non-white, women, differently abled, gender expansive, and historically marginalized.
