OLYMPIA – Governor Ferguson has signed House Bill 1484 into law, marking a powerful step forward in Washington’s fight against sexual violence. Sponsored by Rep. Osman Salahuddin (D-Redmond), the law allows courts to impose enhanced sentences in rape cases that result in pregnancy — regardless of the survivor’s age.
“Rape is one of the most violent, traumatizing crimes a person can endure,” said Rep. Salahuddin. “A resulting pregnancy only deepens that pain. Survivors deserve a justice system that sees the full extent of their trauma — and this law ensures they’re no longer overlooked.”
Previously, enhanced sentencing applied primarily to child survivors. HB 1484 closes that gap, ensuring the law recognizes the profound harm inflicted on all survivors, including adults.
This legislation affirms Washington’s commitment to justice, healing, and accountability — and sends a clear message: the state will not turn its back on survivors.
The bill takes effect 90 days after adjournment of the 2025 legislative session.
