WA Lawmakers to Trump: We Will Not Be Intimidated

OLYMPIA – Today, Washington State legislators from the Members of Color Caucus are sounding the alarm and standing united against President Trump’s dangerous escalation of immigration enforcement.
The reported deployment of ICE special response teams to Seattle, and escalation during peaceful protests in Spokane, combined with the threat of federalizing the National Guard in response to upcoming protests, is not about safety. It is about fear. It is about control. Targeting schools, apartment complexes, and public spaces is not a public safety strategy – it is a calculated act of intimidation. Washington will not be complicit.
We reject this fearmongering. We reject this unlawful overreach. Washington is not a state that bows to threats. We are a state that protects people.
Let us be clear: Local law enforcement has the tools, and the mandate, to protect our communities with integrity, not intimidation. These federal actions are not about upholding the law – they are about punishing cities and communities that dare to stand against hate.
“We are witnessing the attempted federalization of fear,” said Rep. Chris Stearns, Chair of the Members of Color Caucus. “But the truth is, the real fear lives in our communities – in Bellingham, in Mt. Vernon, in Spokane. Wherever ICE separates families or commits violence against peaceful protesters, that is where fear takes root.”
In 2019, the Legislature passed the Keep Washington Working Act to ensure that local law enforcement does not collaborate with ICE. Since then, new laws like HB 1232 and HB 1321 have fortified our ability to provide oversight of private detention centers, reject unauthorized National Guard deployments, and keep decision-making in local hands. Funding has been provided for immigrant legal representation through the Office of Civic Legal Aid as well as a hate-crime hotline (SB 5427).
“The right to protest is not a threat to public safety, it is the foundation of democracy,” said Rep. Natasha Hill, Second Vice Chair of the Members of Color Caucus. “Everyone in this state has the constitutional right to engage in peaceful protest, just like every person has a right to due process.” Legislators are urging Washingtonians to continue organizing, speaking out, and protesting peacefully.
“Black communities know all too well the violence that can come when law enforcement is turned against people demanding justice. As a caucus shaped by the struggle for civil rights, we refuse to stay silent while the National Guard—meant to serve in times of emergency response—is used to support ICE in detaining our neighbors. This misuse retraumatizes overpoliced communities and erodes public trust. We stand in solidarity with those peacefully defending the rights of immigrants and refugees.” Said Rep. Kristine Reeves, Chair of the WA Legislative Black Caucus.
“Latino families are being torn apart,” said Rep. Lillian Ortiz-Self, Chair of the Latino Democratic Caucus. “These raids are not justice. They are trauma, carried out by a government that uses fear as a political tool.”
To all immigrants and communities of color: no matter your language, status, or story, you are not alone. This is not just about one group being targeted. We rise together. We resist together. And Washington will remain united in defense of every community’s dignity, safety, and freedom.

Statement in solidarity from the Latino Democratic Caucus:
The Washington State Latino Democratic Caucus stands in firm solidarity with all immigrant, asylee, and refugee communities across our state and with all those peacefully protesting the increased presence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in our neighborhoods.
We are deeply disturbed by the federal government’s decision to deploy ICE in Washington in ways that destabilize families, stoke fear, and undermine the values of trust and community that we work every day to uphold. Let us be clear: Washingtonians—regardless of immigration status—deserve to feel safe, supported, and free from the threat of unjust detention or deportation.
This moment demands courage from elected leaders and compassion from every corner of our state. We will not be silent as our communities are targeted. We join with protestors, organizers, and families in calling for an end to federal immigration raids and the militarization of our streets. We call on state and local leaders to uphold Washington’s sanctuary policies and resist any cooperation that enables ICE to carry out its harmful agenda.
Our communities are resilient—and we will continue to fight for a Washington where every person, regardless of birthplace or documentation status, can thrive in dignity and peace.
Statement in solidarity from the LGBTQ+ Caucus:
Asylees, refugees, and people without documentation are part of the LGBTQ+ community in Washington state, and this increased immigration enforcement puts these members of our community at risk.
We have worked hard to make Washington a place where people don’t have to live in fear. The reported deployment of ICE special response teams, federalization of the National Guard, and increased immigration enforcement take us backwards on that goal. Members of our community are currently scared to leave their homes, to go to work or school, get groceries, or participate in public life. This is unacceptable.
As legislators we stand in strong support of these members of our community, and in support of all the immigrants that have made our state the place it is today. We join the Members of Color Caucus, the Legislative Black Caucus, and the Latino Democratic Caucus in calling for an end to these federal immigration raids and threats of militarization.

Legisladores de Washington a Trump: No Nos Dejaremos Intimidar

OLYMPIA – Hoy, los legisladores del estado de Washington pertenecientes al Caucus de Miembros de Color, alertan y se mantienen unidos contra la peligrosa escalada de las fuerzas migratorias por parte del Presidente Trump.
El reporte de que se enviarán equipos especiales de ICE a Seattle y la escalada durante las protestas pacíficas en Spokane, junto con la amenaza de federalizar la Guardia Nacional en respuesta a las próximas protestas, no se trata de seguridad. Se trata de miedo. Se trata de control. Atacar escuelas, complejos de apartamentos y espacios públicos no es una estrategia de seguridad pública; es un acto de intimidación calculado. Washington no será cómplice.
Rechazamos esta táctica de sembrar miedo. Rechazamos esta extralimitación ilegal. Washington no es un estado que se doblegue ante las amenazas. Somos un estado que protege a las personas.
Seamos claros: Las fuerzas del orden locales tienen las herramientas y el mandato para proteger a nuestras comunidades con integridad, no con intimidación. Estas acciones federales no tienen como objetivo hacer cumplir la ley, sino castigar a las ciudades y comunidades que se atreven a oponerse al odio.

Nos solidarizamos con quienes defienden pacíficamente los derechos de los inmigrantes y refugiados”, declaró Kristine Reeves, presidenta del Caucus Legislativo Negro de Washington.
“Las familias latinas están siendo destrozadas”, declaró la representante Lillian Ortiz-Self, presidenta del Caucus Demócrata Latino. “Estas redadas no son justicia. Son un trauma, perpetrado por un gobierno que utiliza el miedo como herramienta política”.
A todos los inmigrantes y comunidades de color: sin importar su idioma, estatus o historia, no están solos. No se trata solo de un grupo atacado. Nos levantamos juntos. Resistimos juntos. Y Washington permanecerá unido en defensa de la dignidad, la seguridad y la libertad de cada comunidad.

Declaración de solidaridad del Caucus Demócrata Latino:
El Caucus Demócrata Latino del Estado de Washington se solidariza firmemente con todas las comunidades inmigrantes, asilados y refugiados de nuestro estado, y con todos aquellos que protestan pacíficamente contra la creciente presencia del Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas de Estados Unidos (ICE) en nuestros vecindarios.
Estamos profundamente consternados por la decisión del gobierno federal de movilizar a ICE en Washington de maneras que desestabilizan a las familias, infunden miedo y socavan los valores de confianza y comunidad que defendemos a diario. Seamos claros: los habitantes de Washington, independientemente de su estatus migratorio, merecen sentirse seguros, apoyados y libres de la amenaza de una detención o deportación injusta.
Este momento exige valentía de los líderes electos y compasión de todos los rincones de nuestro estado. No nos quedaremos callados mientras nuestras comunidades son atacadas. Personas asiladas, refugiadas y sin documentación forman parte de la comunidad LGBTQ+ en el estado de Washington, y este aumento en actividad migratoria pone en riesgo a estos miembros de nuestra comunidad.
Hemos trabajado arduamente para que Washington sea un lugar donde la gente no tenga que vivir con miedo. El reporte de que se enviarán equipos especiales de ICE, la federalización de la Guardia Nacional y el aumento en actividad migratorias nos hacen retroceder en ese objetivo. Actualmente, los miembros de nuestra comunidad tienen miedo de salir de sus hogares, ir al trabajo o a la escuela, comprar alimentos o participar en la vida pública. Esto es inaceptable.
Como legisladores, apoyamos firmemente a estos miembros de nuestra comunidad y a todos los inmigrantes que han hecho de nuestro estado lo que es hoy. Nos unimos al Caucus de Miembros de Color, al Caucus Legislativo Negro y al Caucus Demócrata Latino para exigir el fin de estas redadas federales de inmigración y las amenazas de militarización.
