Washington Students ACTing with consistency

The Office of the Superindendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) reported today that our Class of 2013 finished with the nation’s seventh-highest average composite American College Test score. Last year we were fifth and the year before, ninth.

Here’s a chart with the information for the past three years:

Four content areas make up the composite score: English, reading, math and science. Scores are scaled from 1 (lowest) to 36 (highest).

Washington students have scored far above the national average on the ACT for ten straight years. And the fact that 387 more students took the test this year beat the previous participation record.

While these are all good news, and State Superintendent Dorn said he is proud of the students, he added that “…we still have work to do, as a state, to address the opportunity gap that exists between racial subgroups. Scores remain consistent with no real gains.”
