New “gateway” to downtown Olympia from Capitol Campus? You can weigh in Thursday

There’s a new look coming to the north edge of the Capitol Campus, and the public will get a chance to learn what’s in the offing – and to make some suggestions, too — Thursday, Nov. 14, at an open house in Olympia hosted by the state Dept. of Enterprise Services.

Called the “1063 block project,” the undertaking involves the demolition of a parking garage and two-story office building (which formerly housed a children’s museum) that occupy the block that’s across 11th Avenue Southwest from the campus and is further bounded by Capitol Way South, Union Avenue Southwest and Columbia Street Southwest.

The project is financed by $82 million included in the 2013-15 capital budget adopted by the Legislature earlier this year. The idea is to replace the existing building with a new state building that could be home to such agencies as the State Patrol, now in the “white elephant” of the neighboring General Administration Building, a prime candidate itself for eventual replacement.
