Rep. Stanford back in district, looks forward to give-and-take with citizens

Lawmaker keeps close contact with Bothell, Brier, Maltby, Mountlake Terrace, Lynnwood, and Edmonds

OLYMPIA – You better believe state Rep. Derek Stanford was happy to head back home after the 2011 Legislature adjourned the regular session last month.

Once the final gavel fell on the 103-day regular session, Stanford hit the road for the 1st Legislative District – excited like nobody’s business to get reacquainted with family, neighbors, and the sights, sounds, and general character and demeanor of northeast King County and south Snohomish County.

Sure, yes, there remains the little matter of a special legislative session for Stanford and other lawmakers to tackle. The Legislature obviously has work to do reaching agreement on the new operating and capital budgets – as well as wrestling with such matters as streamlining state government, bolstering Washington’s Guaranteed Education Tuition Program, and implementing recommendations from the Higher Education Funding Task Force.

“I’m optimistic that we’ll resolve our differences of opinion and finish the special session fairly soon. And definitely, my ‘One Washington’ priorities remain as they’ve always been: I’m working for policies that create jobs, improve schools, and invest public dollars efficiently and guardedly.”

But make no mistake, the lingering special session hasn’t stopped Stanford from throwing his new district-office doors wide open.

The first-term lawmaker and one of his legislative colleagues, state Rep. Marko Liias, are saving money by sharing an office. Liias is a Democrat who represents the neighboring 21st Legislative District. Stanford’s legislative assistant, Ehsan Aleaziz, is in the office 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

“I’m proud to represent and live among folks who make their homes in the communities and neighborhoods of Bothell, Brier, Maltby, Mountlake Terrace, Lynnwood, and Edmonds,” Stanford said. “Sure, Olympia’s an interesting enough place to visit. But this is my real world.”

Stanford said he’s looking forward to meeting with as many citizens and community groups as possible.
