Statement from Rep. Marko Liias on today’s state revenue forecast

I voted against the state budget this year, because I believed that an all-cuts budget was not sustainable. The cuts to education and long-term care are examples of decisions that are already having devastating effects in our communities right now, while harming our state’s future.

While many other states around the country have raised new revenue since the beginning of the recession, our state has relied almost entirely on deep cuts in vital services including public schools, higher education, nursing homes, and public safety for three straight years, which have left us with very few remaining options. Today’s latest revenue forecast proves that we must raise more revenue in order to balance our budget and live up to our Washington values.

Rep. Marko Liias represents the 21st Legislative District and lives in Mukilteo.
