Rep. Freeman Honors Federal Way AmeriCorps Program

Freeman MLK 250x250On Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Rep. Roger Freeman, D-Federal Way, joined 60 AmeriCorps members at the Dumas Bay Centre to honor their commitment to service.

“Representative Freeman’s speech was a good reminder that it wasn’t just a regular Monday – it was a celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. When he spoke I felt more connected to the legacy of service of leaders throughout our country’s history,” said AmeriCorps team co-lead Jen Cousinea.

The Federal Way AmeriCorps program has been active for 17 years and frequently ranks among the largest programs in the nation. According to 2009 report, 89 percent of teachers reported an improved attitude among students who received AmeriCorps tutoring.

Rep. Freeman has been a longtime supporter of the AmeriCorps program and a strong advocate of public service and volunteerism. Following a short speech commending the team members for their work, he joined them in planting at the Centre.

“The Dumas Bay Centre is a cornerstone of the Federal Way community, and your work is helping to preserve this gem for future generations,” said Freeman. “To be able to join you in honoring Doctor King today is a true privilege.”

Freeman has worked for the past 18 years as an attorney protecting those less fortunate. Before his election to the state legislature, he served on the Federal Way City Council and the Federal Way Human Services Commission.
