New fish guide licensing requirements in effect this Sunday

New Fishing Guidelines in Washington StateWhether it’s throughout our vast Puget Sound shoreline, 4,000 rivers and streams, or 7,000 lakes, sport fishing is hugely popular in Washington.

For those of us who don’t own boats or are not pro anglers, there are hundreds of food and game fish guides and charter services that provide great fishing opportunities.

Food and game fish guides share their techniques and expertise to help make your fishing adventure enjoyable and successful.

There are various licenses available from the Department of Fish and Wildlife depending on the place and type of service the fishing guide provides.

A new law (SB 5786) that goes into effect this this Sunday modifies the application requirements for food and game fish licenses. Starting July 28, any application for a food or game fish license must include:

  • A copy of the applicant’s driver’s license or ID card and business license number.
  • Proof of current first aid and CPR certification.
  • Proof of commercial insurance coverage of at least $300,000.
  • A notarized copy of a valid license issued by the United States Coast Guard for applicants intending to carry passengers for hire in a motorized vessel on navigable waters.

Guides who are already licensed for this license year won’t have to show proof, but they will when they renew next year.
