Construction work ranks, year in and year out, among the “most dangerous jobs” in
America. Recognizing the inherent danger that haunts every building worksite, the state Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) is using the upcoming, seventh annual Construction Safety Day as a means to promote awareness for safety in the industry.
Co-sponsored by L&I and the Governor’s Industrial Safety and Health Advisory Board, construction Safety Day this year will unfold on the Puyallup fairgrounds Wednesday, April 23, from 7 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Interested folks are advised to report to the Fair & Events Center ShowPlex on the fairgrounds, which can be found at 110 9th Avenue Southwest in Puyallup. Registration is $60 in advance or $70 at the door, and there’s a $10 per person discount for groups of five or more. Included in that registration fee is a catered luncheon. L&I emphasizes that knowing safety practices and wearing safety equipment top the list of strategies for preventing construction-industry workers from becoming construction-injury statistics. The department cites falling as one of the main reasons people get killed or injured in construction accidents. Construction Safety Day will indeed pay particular attention to fall-protection, in addition to safety and awareness programs highlighting:
- Working around electricity.
- Keeping drugs and alcohol away from the jobsite.
- Roadway and aerial-lift safety.
- Chemical-hazard communications.
- Silica hazards.
