Although jack-o-lanterns and spider webs still grace our porches, we know winter is coming soon. The new season means lots of fun: the holidays, skiing, snowboarding, cozy nights by the fire. But winter also means short days, long nights and plenty of bad weather. So be prepared, and be safe, especially when it comes to driving.
Now is the time to make sure your car is in good condition for the rainy, snowy, windy months ahead. Get it tuned up and checked out at your local repair shop. Make sure your battery, windshield wipers, radiator, brakes and tires are all in good condition. This is the first full week that studded tires are legal here in Washington and Oregon. If you don’t need studded tired but would like some extra traction on the road there are alternatives available.
Allow extra time to get where you need to go. Expect delays. To avoid unexpected surprises check travel alerts, pass conditions and traffic before you go. Given the short daylight hours, driving with headlights on can help make you more visible. AAA also has some great resources that can help you with safe winter driving including a guide to driving on snow and ice and a guide to driving in the rain.
