By a unanimous vote, lawmakers elected Rep. Steve Bergquist (D-Renton) as Deputy Floor Leader in the House of Representatives.
“It’s an honor to serve the people of the 11th District and the people of our state,” Bergquist said. “The final step for any legislation is a vote on the floor of the House, by all 98 lawmakers, so it’s great to be in the middle of our democracy at work, and to participate in debates that will shape our state for decades.”
Bergquist is a small business owner and high school social studies teacher. He and his wife, a doctor at Seattle’s Children’s Hospital, recently welcomed their first child, a daughter.
“Becoming a father changes how you look at legislation and budgets,” he said. “Our parents and grandparents worked hard to build our community, including the schools and colleges we attend and the highways we drive on. I hope we can work together to build a better future for today’s kids, so that every child has a chance at a great education and a fair shot at the American Dream.”
