OLYMPIA – Today, in the House Committee for Technology and Economic Development, House Bill 2050, sponsored by Rep. Eric Pettigrew, D-Renton, had a successful public hearing.
“Communities are stronger when business owners of all backgrounds have the opportunity to be the backbone of their local economy,” said Pettigrew. “When everyone has a vested interest in the success of their neighborhood, we all benefit. HB 2050 will generate new opportunities for innovation and job creation across our state.”
HB 2050 establishes a new Small Business Enhancement Program within the State Office of Minority and Women’s Business Enterprises (OMWBE). This new office will encourage and facilitate opportunities for small business growth and job development. OMWBE will identify and mentor existing small businesses that might qualify for state contracts. The new office will also assist small-business owners with certification and advanced business development.
“Washington needs an economy that works for everyone, not just the wealthy few,” said Pettigrew. “As state leaders it is our job to pass policies that help create the kind of state that benefits everyone. By nurturing innovation for female, minority, and disadvantaged small-business owners and connecting them with resources for success, we will have a healthier economy and stronger communities to show for it.”
HB 2050 also includes tracking and outcome based-performance measures to ensure the program is effective and a smart investment of taxpayer dollars. The bill is now waiting to be scheduled for a vote out of Technology and Economic Development Committee.
