Sound Transit Phase 3 — What do you think?

Sound Transit Phase 3

Linden Park P-Patch & Orchard.

Now that session has ended I have had a chance to learn more about great work happening in our 36th legislative district. Last week the King Conservation District (KCD) showed me the projects that they have been working on.

More than 600 families are able to grow fresh food in the 90 P-Patches in the City of Seattle. The 17 P-Patch gardens in the 36th District all include giving gardens, where volunteers grow fresh local food and donate it to our local food banks.

KCD’s grant program allocated funds to the Master Tree Fruit Steward Program through City Fruit. Seattle has 16 public orchards and over 300 registered private fruit trees, which City Fruit helps to maintain through volunteer work and education, like providing natural pest control. The program provided 7,500 pounds of fruit to the Greenwood and Ballard Food Banks. One of these public orchards is here at Linden Park.

Parks and green spaces also provide transportation solutions. Volunteers were able clear blackberry bushes and replace them with native plans to open up Lawton Park in Magnolia. Now the park is used by commuters to walk to bus stops and as a path for a “walking school bus,” which are encouraged in the Safe Routes to School program.

I was also able to see the work the King Conservation District provided to restore the shoreline along Salmon Bay. The Salmon Bay Natural Area helps to restore natural habitat, which aides spawning salmon making their way toward the fish ladders at the Ballard Locks.
