Legislative update: The end of week 2 in Olympia

Friends and neighbors –

As I finish my second week as your State Representative in Olympia, I wanted to check in and let you know how things have been going.

I’ve hit the ground running by sponsoring bills, navigating legislation through my three committees, and meeting with constituents on a range of public safety and school issues. I’ve sponsored bills on domestic violence, equal pay, and elder abuse. I have also introduced the following legislation on your behalf.

Punishing sex traffickers & protecting minors

As a prosecutor in our community, I always thought we needed to update laws to better protect woman and children from sexual assault. On my first day of office, I introduced a bill to help combat sex trafficking and the commercial abuse of minors. The legislation, if passed, would hold accountable those traffickers who pay minors with drugs and gifts, instead of cash.

Closing the lobbying “revolving door”

Another bill I filed goes after the practice of elected officials or high-ranking government employees leaving their positions and immediately going to work in corporate lobbying firms. In order to stop this from happening, I’m proposing a “cooling off” period for one year before government officials can become lobbyists. Currently, they can go straight from government to a corporate lobbying job. I’m hoping we can improve confidence in government by ending this practice.
