Stonier elected to Majority Floor Leader role in Olympia

OLYMPIA – Rep. Monica Stonier, D-Vancouver, was elected to serve as majority floor leader by members of the House Democratic Caucus on Tuesday.

“It’s an honor to be elected by my colleagues to this new leadership role,” said Stonier. “Voters in Washington state and all across the nation elected women to public office in record numbers. It’s especially important to have strong female voices at the leadership table now that women make up a majority of the House Democratic Caucus.”

“Monica is an excellent choice for floor leader,” said Rep. Gael Tarleton, D-Ballard. “Having served in this role for the last three years, I understand the unique challenges she’ll be facing. Monica has the necessary poise and patience that are needed to do this job effectively.”

The majority floor leader is primarily responsible for coordinating the floor debate and the passage of bills during the legislative session.

In stark contrast to the gridlock in Washington, D.C., the Washington State House of Representatives has a long track record of passing legislation with strong bipartisan majorities, including legislation sponsored by the minority party. The majority floor leader plays a key role in working collaboratively with members on the other side of the aisle.

“Washington state is lucky to have Monica at the leadership table,” said Rep. Marcus Riccelli, D-Spokane. “She’s a natural leader who knows how to get things done. Monica is a strong advocate for providing education opportunities for all kids and for working families. I’m looking forward to continue serving with her on our leadership team.”

“I’m from Southwest Washington, where we have progressives, conservatives, and everything in between,” Stonier said. “Democrats and Republicans have to work together to get results for our communities. This is the approach I’ll be using to ensure lawmakers work together to improve the lives of all Washington residents.”

Stonier is serving her second term as a state representative. She was elected by her peers to serve as Deputy Majority Whip at the start of the 2018 legislative session.

In addition to her new leadership role, she also serves as vice chair of the House Education Committee, and chairs the Working Families Caucus and the Financial Education Public-Private Partnership.

The next legislative session will convene on January 14, 2019.
