In August, The New York Times Magazine published a special edition devoted to the centrality of African slavery in American history. Slavery “is sometimes referred to as the country’s original sin,” wrote Editor Jake Silverstein in the preamble to the magazine, “but it is more than that: It is the country’s very origin.” The Pacific Northwest is no exception. Read more in Crosscut


An iceberg the size of Los Angeles just broke off Antarctica
A gigantic iceberg has broken off from the Amery Ice Shelf in East Antarctica. The iceberg, named D-28, is over 600 square miles in size, which is bigger than the city of Los Angeles. It’s equal to about 27 Manhattan Islands. Read more in USA Today
