Snohomish police chief reassigned after rumors about antifa spurred armed response
The police chief of Snohomish was replaced on Monday following a week of mounting tension over how he handled a rumored but unrealized threat that antifa activists planned to riot and damage storefronts in the community. A divide in Snohomish, a city of 10,000 near the Cascade foothills, had come to light early last week as citizens armed with semi-automatic weapons and displaying a Confederate flag gathered in the city’s historic downtown. ‘A tsunami of people in need’: Rental crisis could hit Spokane when eviction moratorium ends
Terri Anderson and Steve Corker often disagree over the role of government in matters involving renters and landlords, but a common fear has recently united them: a massive wave of evictions that could soon be coming to Spokane County. Anderson is the interim executive directors of the Tenants Union of Washington State, and Corker is president of the Landlord Association of the Inland Northwest. Together they say that when Gov. Jay Inslee’s moratorium on most types of eviction ends Aug. 1, landlords will be able to take their tenants to court for not paying rent. Continue reading at The Spokesman-Review. (Tyler Tjomsland)

Seattle council members explore defunding police after calls from protesters
Seattle City Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda explained what she says defunding the police really means — an emphasis on other public safety programs. “When we talk about defunding the police, it is really about reallocating funding to areas that our community needs; housing, transit, food security, childcare. We have heard from cities like Minneapolis, Los Angeles, New York, that it can be done in a way to reduce crime to invest in public safety, and that is what I am interested in doing,” Mosqueda said.
