“Community means being there for each other”: Governor signs Walen non-profit property tax exemption.

OLYMPIA – The governor has signed legislation that exempts non-profits from property taxes when they rent or loan the property to other non-profits or government entities. House Bill 1094, sponsored by Rep. Amy Walen, D-Kirkland, would help make it easier for non-profit organizations to use their property to aid other non-profits.

“Community means being there for each other. Non-profits embody this every day,” said Walen. “Giving them a tax exemption for supporting other non-profits means that can do this more effectively and efficiently.”

With the governor’s signature, non-profits can now receive a tax exemption for renting or loaning property to all sorts of organizations, including recovery support groups, non-profit housing providers, or organizations that feed and care for Washington’s most vulnerable residents.

“Community networks and relationships help amplify all the good work that non-profits do,” continued Walen. “Anyone who has spent any amount of time working with these organizations knows that they naturally share resources. This bill helps that instinct make more sense from a financial perspective. It is a smart investment that will bring a lot of benefit to our communities across the state.”

With the governor’s signature, House Bill 1094 is set to 90 days after the legislature concludes the 2025 legislative session, slated to end on April 27.
