OLYMPIA – House Bill 1484, introduced by Rep. Osman Salahuddin (D-Redmond), passed the Senate unanimously today. The legislation expands aggravating circumstances in sentencing to include pregnancies resulting from rape, regardless of the survivor’s age.
“Rape is a violent, horrific crime that leaves lasting trauma,” said Salahuddin. “A resulting pregnancy only deepens that trauma. This bill ensures justice is based on the magnitude of harm, not the survivor’s age.”
Under current law, enhanced sentencing is mostly limited to minors. HB 1484 closes that gap, giving courts the authority to impose stronger sentences in all rape-related pregnancies.
“No survivor should ever feel invisible in the eyes of the law,” Salahuddin added. “This bill sends a clear message: Washington does not tolerate sexual violence and will hold perpetrators fully accountable.”
