OLYMPIA – Governor Ferguson has signed House Bill 1718 into law, championed by Rep. My-Linh Thai (D-Bellevue), to provide a confidential, stigma-free space for physicians and physician assistants to seek mental health support without fear.
“Physicians can’t care for others if they’re burnt out or in crisis themselves,” said Rep. Thai. “This bill ensures they have access to support systems that protect both their well-being and patient care.”
HB 1718 exempts certain physician well-being programs from mandatory reporting requirements, allowing medical professionals to access peer-to-peer support when they’re facing career fatigue or stress. The bill also protects the confidentiality of these sessions—encouraging participation and promoting emotional resilience across the profession.
With burnout driving many from practice, HB 1718 is a critical workforce retention tool that prioritizes mental health and ensures patients continue receiving high-quality care across Washington.
The bill takes effect 90 days after adjournment of the session.
