Governor Bob Ferguson has signed into law House Bill 1605, sponsored by Rep. Jake Fey (D-Tacoma), which creates a longevity bonus program to help retain experienced Washington State Patrol (WSP) troopers.

“Retention has been one of the biggest challenges facing the State Patrol,” said Rep. Fey. “This new law sends a clear message that we value the troopers who’ve dedicated their careers to public safety and are committed to keeping them on the force.”

Under HB 1605, troopers who have served 26 years or more will be eligible for an annual longevity bonus, designed to help reduce attrition, maintain institutional knowledge, and strengthen public safety statewide.

“Our communities are safer when we have well-trained, seasoned officers on the road,” said Fey. “This legislation is a small but important step in supporting those who have given decades of service to Washington.”

HB 1605 passed both the House and Senate with bipartisan support and takes effect later this year.
