State Rep. Darya Farivar was the first Middle Eastern woman elected to the Washington state Legislature. The Seattle Democrat said Tuesday that her family fled Iran in search of a better life: “I am living proof of that hope — and yet here we are again.”

Washington state sees drop in child health, education stats
Washington is slipping in key measures of child well-being, a new report shows. Why it matters: The results point to a need to invest more in kids, Stephan Blanford, executive director of Children’s Alliance, said in an emailed statement. Driving the news: Washington slipped in the national ranking for overall child well-being — from 14th to 16th — in the Annie E. Enter House Bill 1721. The proposal from House Environment & Energy Committee Chair Beth Doglio, D-Olympia, would have let Washingtonians skip a trip to their local dealership and buy EVs straight from their makers. Fans of the idea framed it as a way to cut out the middleman, markups, and haggling from the car-buying experience.
