Data difficulties complicate WA’s effort to close educational achievement gaps
Work to close educational achievement gaps for several minority groups in Washington state is being hindered by a lack of data, according to people involved in the yearslong effort. A new series of achievement gap studies was released in June. These suggest some marginal improvement in closing achievement gaps for several minority groups over the past 16 years, but that more work is needed to support students of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. King County Council approves plans, funding for Capitol Hill crisis center
A former Polyclinic building on Capitol Hill will be the home of Seattle’s walk-in mental health crisis center, following months of public discussion about whether the busy neighborhood is the right location. The Metropolitan King County Council voted Tuesday to approve plans and funding for the center, which will be part of a larger network spread across King County. Continue reading at Seattle Times. SCOTUS case could shake Washington conversion therapy ban
A case heard by the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday could force Washington and more than 20 other states to reconsider their laws banning youth conversion therapy. The practice, which aims to change a patient’s sexual orientation or gender identity, has been discredited by leading medical associations but is now at the center of a debate over free speech.
