A Step Toward Responsible Gun Ownership
Every year, gun violence claims far too many lives and leaves lasting scars on our communities. It’s a reality that calls for decisive action, and I’m committed to doing all I can to help prevent these tragedies.
On January 21, I had the honor of standing alongside my colleagues at a press conference for gun responsibility to speak about my bill, House Bill 1152, designed to make our communities safer by requiring firearms to be securely stored when not in use, whether at home or in a vehicle. By ensuring that firearms are out of sight and inaccessible to unauthorized individuals, we can reduce the risks of accidental shootings, thefts, and misuse.
HB 1152 also addresses the growing concern of firearms ending up in the wrong hands. It holds gun owners accountable for properly securing their weapons, emphasizing shared responsibility in reducing gun violence.
This bill is not just about policy—it’s about protecting our loved ones and fostering safer neighborhoods. Together, we are taking a vital step toward creating a Washington where everyone can feel secure.

A Win-Win-Win: Adding Housing Options, Addressing Loneliness, Decreasing Property Taxes for Low- Income Seniors
Housing supply in Washington is insufficient and the most affordable way to increase our housing stock is to make better use of existing housing. The Thurston County Board of Health recently declared Isolation and loneliness a public health crisis in our county. And, it’s hard to make ends meet these days for many people. This bill allows seniors, veterans and disabled individuals who qualify for an income-based property tax exemption to exempt up to $6,000 of rental income from their overall income when applying for the tax exemption.
Stable housing is critical. I’ll continue to fight for solutions that address housing challenges and create opportunities for all Washingtonians to call our state home.

Advancing Organic Waste Management
Effective management of food and other organic waste is crucial for environmental sustainability and the health of our communities. This session, I am championing House Bill 1497, which aims to improve outcomes associated with waste material management systems, with a particular focus on composting and the handling of organic materials.
By diverting organic waste from landfills, we can significantly reduce methane emissions—a potent greenhouse gas contributing to climate change. HB 1497 proposes measures to enhance composting infrastructure and support programs that encourage the proper disposal and recycling of organic materials. This initiative not only addresses environmental concerns but also promotes sustainable practices that benefit our local economy and public health.

Budget Priorities: Protecting Essential Services
As we craft the state budget, my top priority is ensuring that basic services remain intact for all Washingtonians. I am deeply committed to safeguarding access to food, healthcare, and housing for low-income families and individuals who rely on these critical resources. I will also be advocating to ensure funding for schools across the state. A fair and compassionate budget is essential, and I’ll continue to advocate for policies that reflect these values.
