Virtual Town Hall Tomorrow!

town hall

The best way to participate in your democracy is by sharing your stories and priorities. I hope you’ll join me for our 22nd District virtual town hall on Tuesday, January 30.

If you have any questions you can always submit them ahead of time here. Tune in via my Facebook page starting at 7PM.

Reproductive Freedom: Standing Strong Against Restrictions

Time and again, Washington Legislative Republicans have tried to downplay the threat to reproductive rights in our state.

Behind their assurances, however, lies a different story – Washington Republicans have introduced more than 40 bills since 2016 aimed at restricting abortion and reproductive care rights.

We won’t back down. Democrats are standing strong, blocking these restrictive bills and passing laws to protect those seeking reproductive care, our healthcare providers, and your private healthcare data.

Let’s be clear: we are steadfast in our commitment to defending your reproductive freedom in Washington state. Take a look:

Transforming Washington for a Sustainable Future

A few weeks ago, in our record-breaking cold spell, the freezing temperatures wreaked havoc on vulnerable populations, leaving our homeless community struggling against the bitter cold and displacing countless individuals whose homes succumbed to burst pipes and flooding.

This isn’t just a cold snap; it’s a stark reminder that climate change is no longer a distant threat but a pressing reality impacting us now. We are facing tangible consequences of a changing planet, demanding our immediate attention and action

The Climate Commitment Act (CCA) is a proactive and transformative solution to mitigate these challenges. Washington’s largest polluters must pay for their pollution AND reduce their pollution over time. The CCA channels pollution payments back into communities, benefitting families, schools, workers, and more. Projects supported by the CCA improve health and safety, through incentives to install cleaner HVAC systems in schools, homes and businesses.  The program reduces air pollution, supporting the transition to zero-emission vehicles, and funds clean transportation options and transit.  Click here to learn more about how you can take advantage of tax incentives and rebates to be part of Washington’s effort to combat climate change.

Housing Stability for Our Community

I’m excited to announce that House Bill 2026, inspired by a constituent who attended a town hall, is advancing to the House floor. This bill will allow senior citizens, disabled individuals, and  veterans who qualify for an income based property tax exemption to exempt  from their income calculation up to $600 a month of rental income from their primary residence.   With our severe housing crunch, this concept aims to increase housing (the cheapest form – that which is already built), while also keeping cash in the pocket of lower income seniors and possibly helping to address loneliness.  Senior Services for South Sound has a home share program.  Check it out!  I want to express my gratitude for your ongoing support in bringing forward proposals that directly impact our community’s well-being. Thank you for your continued engagement in shaping positive change.

Legislative Page Program: Empowering Future Leaders

The Page Program is an incredible opportunity for high school students to experience the legislative process up close. While all positions are filled this session, if you know a motivated student who would benefit from this unique one-week program in Olympia, please encourage them to apply for next year’s session! More information about the program and the application process can be found here.

Exciting News for College-Bound Students

The new, revised, and simplified FAFSA form for college aid is here! From a streamlined application process to increased financial assistance opportunities, here’s what you need to know for the 2024-25 academic year:

Less is More: The redesigned FAFSA has fewer questions, making it easier than ever to apply for grants, work-study jobs, and loans.

Student Aid Index (SAI): The SAI now calculates your ability to pay for college, with more income protected and changes benefiting students with children.

Pell Grant Boost: Over 2.1 million more students could now qualify for a full Pell Grant, providing substantial aid for those with exceptional financial need.

Easy Application: Create your ID on the Federal Student Aid website. The deadline is June 30, 2025.

Applying for financial aid is a crucial first step toward college or job training. Many families assume they won’t qualify, but there’s more help available than ever before. This year, a family of four making up to $120,500 can qualify for financial aid in Washington. The only way to know for sure if you’re eligible is to apply.

Learn more, get support, and apply for financial aid on WSAC’s Apply page.

Thank you so much for reading!
