Dear friends and neighbors,
Last week, we hosted a virtual town hall. Thank you for those who watched live on Facebook and YouTube. If you missed it, you can rewatch it here!
From your questions at the town hall, it was clear our district is very concerned about the chaotic cuts and directives by the President. Many of our neighbors have been directly impacted. Attacks on women and members of the LGBTQ community, threats to the democratic process, and the impact of cuts to Medicaid and other programs to our community are an effort to overwhelm, demoralize, and prevent us from defending our values. We can’t let that happen.
I’ll continue to work to protect our community at the state level, working closely with Attorney General Nick Brown, to stop Trump and his allies from undermining our civil liberties and Washington’s values. The uncertainty around federal funding makes it even more critical to pass a state budget this session that responsibly funds the services Washingtonians rely on.
2025 Legislative Priorities
With less than five weeks remaining in the legislative session, our priorities get closer to reaching the Governor’s desk. These are the House Democratic Caucus priorities for the 2025 Legislative Session.
In addition, the following legislation I’ve introduced is making its way through the Senate and outlines my priorities as Vice-Chair of the Civil Rights & Judiciary Committee and a dedicated advocate for reforming our criminal legal system. Sign up for notifications on the bills below:
HB 1112 address delays in Seattle’s municipal court by allowing pro-tempore judges in Seattle to have the same requirements as every other jurisdiction in the state.
HB 1113 helps individuals break the cycle of incarceration and petty crime by individualizing accountability and ordering them into behavioral health treatment to address the circumstances which led to harm head on.
HB 1130 updates our developmental disability waiver system to ensure those who are most in need of services can access them.
HB 1218 reforms the broken competency evaluation & restoration system by encouraging a more thoughtful approach to referral to comply with the Trueblood court order. Learn more here.
HB 1395 streamlines the home care worker background check process to make sure caregivers can continue working and not have care interrupted unless it’s appropriate.
Happy Nowruz!
Happy Nowruz to all who celebrate! Nowruz marks the New Year in the Persian calendar and the first day of spring for many people from Iran, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and many other countries and regions around the world. Learn more by watching this video.
