Yesterday, Rep. Roger Goodman, D-Kirkland, held a news conference with Sen. Marko Liias, D-Mukilteo to discuss bills they have introduced in the House and Senate to reduce class sizes for all K-12 students in Washington state.
Washington ranks 47th in the nation in class sizes. With more than 30 students in a classroom, teachers cannot possibly give students the attention they deserve. Many students can fall through the cracks.
Compelling research shows that class size matters for every grade level. The US Dept. of Education recognizes reducing class size as one of only four proven methods to improving educational outcomes.
Washington voters want smaller class sizes. In 2000, they approved I-728, lowering class sizes in grades K-4. Due to budget constraints, however, class sizes have not been reduced enough. HB 2589, introduced by Goodman this past week, reaffirms his commitment to all our students.
The bill was referred to the Education Committee and awaits a public hearing.
