Dear Neighbors,
The Legislature is up and running following the historic snow storm this past weekend. Here are some quick updates on what we have been up to.
Did you see the empty shelves at stores before this weekend’s storm? Well for some in our communities, this is not an unusual sight. This is why over the past few years, I have repeatedly advocated for anti-hunger legislation. My bill, HB 1731, would establish the Washington Food Policy Forum. This public-private partnership would:
- Increase availability of Washington-grown foods statewide and reduce food insecurity.
- Expand and promote programs which bring these healthy Washington-grown foods in schools and adult care programs.
- Examine ways to increase retention of small and mid-size farms, including emphasizing the educational needs of the next generation of farmers.
I believe in a food system that sustains our communities, farmers and environment.
Reducing single use plastics
Over the past few years, a number of local governments have enacted policies aimed at reducing single use plastic products used in food, including utensils, straws, lids and containers. It’s time to bring this thinking statewide.
My bill, HB 1632, would restrict the use of these plastics beginning in 2030. It would also direct the Department of Health to complete a study ensuring that people with disabilities are getting their needs met as we phase out single use plastics.
As we have seen over the last week, climate change is happening right now. Reducing the use of these single use plastics is one way we can attempt to protect our lands and waters while we still have time.

Participation on a board or commission is one of the most effective ways steps you can take in becoming an active voice in government. Currently, Gov. Inslee is looking for appointments to a variety of these boards and commissions, including:
