Survey Results & Supporting Immigrant Communities

Dear friends and neighbors,

Happy Black History Month! The legislative session is now fully underway, and as week four ends, I want to thank all of those who filled out the legislative priorities survey in my last legislative update. Your feedback is extremely important to me and helps me focus on improving our community.

You shared that the safety of our community is a top priority, which is why I have signed on to bills like HB 1056, which will improve community trust with law enforcement. Tangentially, you prioritized reducing gun violence, so I’ve signed on in support of HB 1132, limiting firearm and ammunition bulk purchasing.

Another notable priority was environmental protection. This is a necessary step towards a green future, so I have cosigned HB 1550, improving the end-of-life management of electric vehicle batteries.

As my colleagues and I work on additional legislation, I will prioritize supporting bills that address your top concerns and household challenges.

Update On My Bills

I wanted to share some updates on legislation I have introduced so far this session. House Bill 1339 proposes a shift of general local government elections to even-numbered years to increase voter turnout. This bill has been moving through the legislative process, passing executive session on the 4th of February.

House Bill 1483, is back again! This bill establishes the Right to Repair Act, which requires electronics manufacturers to make electronic parts and components available to independent repair providers. This bill makes electronic repair more equitable and accessible, especially for schools and agencies facing increased repair costs.

In the digital era, access to reliable technology is a necessity. This is why I introduced House Bills 1503 and 1517, increasing and funding digital equity efforts across the state of Washington. These bills expand broadband access across Washington in an equitable manner.

Upcoming Appointment Opportunities

Washington is home to a plethora of diverse communities and identities. We are always looking for experienced and talented Washingtonians from a wide array of backgrounds to participate in boards and commissions to ensure our government is representative of our great state. I am thrilled to share the highlighted Current and Upcoming Appointment Opportunities. Anyone interested in being appointed must fill out this Application. If you are interested in learning more about opportunities to get involved, we encourage you to explore the Boards and Commissions Profiles. Thank you for your assistance in finding well-rounded Washingtonians with skill and diverse experiences. Please feel free to contact the Boards and Commissions staff with any questions. Thank you!

Rapid Response Hub for Immigrant Communities

Washington has consistently stood as a beacon of hope for immigrants. Thanks to the work of my colleagues in the House Democratic Caucus, we’ve codified critical protections into state law, such as the Keep Washington Working Act, made investments in civil legal aid, expanded healthcare access for undocumented immigrants, and banned for-profit detention centers. This week, Governor Ferguson signed an executive order creating a rapid response team to support children facing separation.

But the fight doesn’t stop there. In response to the growing fears in our communities, the Washington State Commission on Hispanic Affairs has launched a rapid response hub to support undocumented immigrants. It is filled with vital resources, tools, and information designed to help families navigate these challenging times.

We cannot allow fear and exclusion to define our state. Justice and equity demand our voice, action, and commitment. Read more about our work to support immigrant communities in these statements from Speaker Jinkins (D-Tacoma) and Chair Ortiz-Self (D-Mukilteo) of the Latino Democratic Caucus.

As session continues, we will share a full update on this and other meaningful legislation in the next update.

Please continue to share your thoughts on issues that matter most to you by emailing me. Thank you for staying engaged!

Best wishes,

Representative Mia Gregerson
