Washington’s Black Caucus is strong, growing, and ready to deliver results. The Washington State Legislative Black Caucus (LBC) is now the largest Black Caucus on the West Coast—yes, even bigger than California. That’s not just a flex. That’s power. And we’re using that power to fight for what our people deserve.
The Revolution WILL be televised! Shout out to Kendrick Lamar for representing for the culture and making the big game a big win for US!

OUR MISSION & VISION
At the LBC, we are unapologetic in our commitment to ensuring that Black people across Washington have access, opportunity, and the resources needed to thrive.
We know that when Black people thrive, everybody benefits. But we also know the system wasn’t built for us. That’s why the LBC exists—to shake the table, rewrite the rules, and make sure our communities are seen, heard, and protected.
We work to dismantle anti-Blackness in all its forms and fight for policies that reflect our diverse experiences and needs. Our advocacy is rooted in the principles of integrity, equity, and justice.

2025 LEGISLATIVE BLACK PRIORITIES
This year, we’re prioritizing key legislative efforts that center Black community needs and advance economic opportunity, social justice, and equity. These initiatives wouldn’t be at the forefront without the leadership of the LBC:
🔹 Community Reinvestment Program – Investing directly in Black communities (Rep. Taylor)
🔹 Social Equity in Cannabis Program – Ensuring Black entrepreneurs benefit from industry reforms (Rep. Entenman)
🔹 Reparations Study – Moving toward economic justice for Black Washingtonians (Rep. Street)
🔹 Textured Hair Education & Training – Ensuring Black hair is properly represented in cosmetology training (Rep. Morgan)
🔹 Public Safety Reform – Addressing racial disparities in traffic stops (HB 1512) and lowering BAC limits to protect lives (HB 1315/SB 5067)
🔹 Covenant Homeownership Expansion & Loan Forgiveness – Tackling the racial wealth gap through homeownership opportunities (Rep. Taylor)
🔹 Wealth Tax & Progressive Revenue – Ensuring the wealthiest pay their fair share to support Black communities (HB 1319)
This is just a glimpse of what we’re fighting for. From childcare and education to environmental justice and consumer protections, we are making sure Black voices are heard and that action is taken.

BLACK HISTORY IN THE MAKING
This Black History Month we honor the past, celebrate the present, and build for the future.
Black History Month isn’t just about reflection—it’s about action. We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us, and we move knowing that the work is far from over. Our ancestors didn’t march, organize, and build for us to settle. We are here in these legislative halls to make real change happen for Black folks in Washington—no apologies, no compromises.

BUILDING BLACK POWER BEYOND THE CAPITOL
Legislation is just one piece of the puzzle. We are also focused on strengthening our collective power through community engagement, expanding our reach with a dedicated LBC website, and securing resources to support Black lawmakers in their work.
We know that real change happens when we come together. That’s why we need YOU—our community, our advocates, our history-makers—to stay engaged and hold the system accountable.

KINDNESS AND JUSTICE
“Kindness eases change. Love quiets fear. And a sweet and powerful positive obsession blunts pain, diverts rage, and engages each of us in the greatest, the most intense of our chosen struggles.” – Octavia Butler, author
On behalf of the Legislative Black Caucus, we reflect on these powerful words as a guiding principle in the fight for justice and equity. Octavia Butler’s wisdom reminds us that kindness, love, and purpose are not just ideals—they are necessary tools for change.
In the face of adversity, kindness fosters unity, love diminishes fear, and a deep, unwavering commitment fuels our collective struggle for a more just and equitable society. As we push forward, let us embrace this “sweet and powerful positive obsession” to uplift our communities and create lasting progress.
Let’s go!
