Cascadia High-Speed Rail: Will It Finally Happen Or Is It ‘Time To Kill This Thing’?
A new government report on high speed rail in the Pacific Northwest recommends that Oregon, Washington and British Columbia formalize their interest in a Cascadia bullet train by creating an independent body to plan and eventually build it. But a critic associated with a conservative think tank responded that the region should take heed of California’s high speed rail woes and put a spike in the Cascadia bullet train ambitions. Democrats And Some Republicans Push To Add Stimulus Checks To COVID-19 Relief Bill
Congressional leaders are working to finalize the details of a narrow, short-term coronavirus aid package, but some lawmakers are making a last-minute push to add a fresh round of stimulus checks to the deal. The current negotiations are focused on a $908 billion bipartisan plan that includes more money for small businesses, additional federal unemployment benefits and money for testing, vaccine distribution and schools. ‘Extreme stress’: Inmates at state’s first prison to face an outbreak watch cases surge again
COVID-19 cases are spiking in several Washington prisons, with hundreds of new cases reported over the past week. People incarcerated at Monroe Correctional Complex, now bracing for a second outbreak, are still reeling from the first. Donna Leroy’s boyfriend is one of 66 inmates who have tested positive for coronavirus in Monroe since the pandemic began. The nation reached new heights in voting in the 2020 presidential election, and the state of Washington is no exception: It broke the record for numbers of ballots cast and came close to the record for percentage of voters voting. Secretary of State Kim Wyman announced Tuesday that 4,116,894 voters, or 84.14% of Washington’s 4,892,871 registered voters, filled out their ballots for the Nov. 3 election. Residents facing poverty in Tacoma might soon be able to seek help from the city in the form of a cash payment. A $100,000 grant in partnership with the Mayors for a Guaranteed Income (MGI) and United Way of Pierce County will pave the way for further exploration of guaranteed income in Tacoma.
