Biden on cusp of presidency after gains in Pennsylvania
Democrat Joe Biden was on the cusp of winning the presidency on Friday as he opened up narrow leads over President Donald Trump in the critical battlegrounds of Georgia and Pennsylvania. Those put Biden in a stronger position to capture the 270 Electoral College votes needed to take the White House. The winner will lead a country facing a historic set of challenges, including a surging pandemic and deep political polarization. Continue reading at The Olympian. (CAROLYN KASTER, AP)
Washington Supreme Court rules dairy workers must get overtime
A deeply divided Washington Supreme Court on Thursday ruled 5-4 in favor of farm laborers, saying dairy workers in the state should have received overtime pay as part of the Washington Minimum Wage Act. While the decision came from a case brought by dairy workers, it appears the ruling will require all farmers to pay overtime. However, it’s not yet known whether those farmers will have to pay overtime retroactive to the suit’s filing , said Jay Gordon, policy director for the Washington State Dairy Federation. During the pandemic, we may have lost the things we are attached to or things that we are used to. Representative democracy is a process, one that plays out over years or even generations. While high-profile elections for president or governor or congressional representative receive the bulk of the attention from voters and the media, the outcome of county council races or legislative contests often have a greater impact on our daily lives.
