Supreme Court says gay, transgender workers are protected by federal law forbidding discrimination on the basis of sex
“This is a huge victory for LGBTQ equality,” said James Esseks of the American Civil Liberties Union. He added: “The Supreme Court’s clarification that it’s unlawful to fire people because they’re LGBTQ is the result of decades of advocates fighting for our rights. The court has caught up to the majority of our country, which already knows that discriminating against LGBTQ people is both unfair and against the law.” Continue reading at The Washington Post. Report: COVID-19 cases, deaths will ‘increase substantially’ unless checked in Eastern Washington
The new data analysis comes from a situation report released by the Washington Department of Health Saturday, which shows that several parts of Eastern Washington have yet to reach their peak number of cases. The models also forecast that without additional interventions, Yakima, Spokane, Benton and Franklin counties will see more COVID-19 cases and deaths in the coming summer months. Seattle protest leaders call for defunding and dismantling police. What would that look like?
Something has changed in the conversation around police reform amid the protests that have gripped Seattle and the nation for weeks. “Reform” hardly seems the word for it anymore. The revulsion around Floyd’s killing is so strong, the loss of confidence in police so widespread, especially in their ability to root out violent racism, that many protesters are calling for police to be defunded, dismantled or abolished altogether. State says schools will reopen this fall
Washington’s schools chief said Thursday that he expects school districts to reopen buildings and return to in-person learning next school year, as long as public health guidelines allow them to do so. The goal: Resume regular, face-to-face schedules for most or all students at the beginning of the 2020-21 school year. Continue reading at The Yakima Herald. (Amanda Ray)

Cities Grew Safer. Police Budgets Kept Growing.
In Boston, Los Angeles and Milwaukee, about one in every 10 dollars of local government spending goes to the police. In Minneapolis, it’s about one in every 20 dollars. American society has not settled on what that number should be — how much of a priority the police ought to have, alongside schools and parks and housing and health care. But the police share of spending has grown over the past 40 years, even as cities have become far safer. Continue reading at The New York Times. (Quoctrung Bui)

Inslee orders new probe in death of man in police custody
Gov. Jay Inslee has ordered an independent investigation into the death of a man while in the custody of Tacoma police after new information emerged that at least one Pierce County Sheriff’s deputy and a Washington State Patrol trooper were at the scene when he was detained and died on March 3. Inslee said Wednesday that officials are working to determine who will conduct the investigation and who will make charging decisions in the death of Manuel Ellis. The county medical examiner ruled the death a homicide, concluding that Ellis died from a lack of oxygen due to physical restraint. Continue reading at Kitsap Sun. (Ellen M. Banner, AP)
Amazon to halt police use of controversial facial-recognition technology for one year
In a significant reversal, Amazon said Wednesday it will stop police use of its controversial facial-recognition technology for a year as it awaits federal legislation to regulate it. Amid global protests sparked by the police killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and other Black people, companies have come under increasing scrutiny for their sale of technologies to law enforcement agencies, with a particular focus on facial recognition, which has been shown to misidentify people of color more frequently than white people and used to identify protesters. ‘This is not a game’: Trump threatens to ‘take back’ Seattle as protesters set up ‘autonomous zone’
After days of clashes with protesters outside the Seattle Police Department’s East Precinct, authorities backed down on Monday, removing barricades and boarding up the building. Since then, protesters have moved in, proclaiming the area the “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone,” where the police are forbidden, food is free and documentaries are screened at night. To some protesters, it’s a first step toward their demands to defund the police and end racial injustice. Continue reading at The Washington Post.

Snohomish police chief reassigned after rumors about antifa spurred armed response
The police chief of Snohomish was replaced on Monday following a week of mounting tension over how he handled a rumored but unrealized threat that antifa activists planned to riot and damage storefronts in the community. A divide in Snohomish, a city of 10,000 near the Cascade foothills, had come to light early last week as citizens armed with semi-automatic weapons and displaying a Confederate flag gathered in the city’s historic downtown. ‘A tsunami of people in need’: Rental crisis could hit Spokane when eviction moratorium ends
Terri Anderson and Steve Corker often disagree over the role of government in matters involving renters and landlords, but a common fear has recently united them: a massive wave of evictions that could soon be coming to Spokane County. Anderson is the interim executive directors of the Tenants Union of Washington State, and Corker is president of the Landlord Association of the Inland Northwest. Together they say that when Gov. Jay Inslee’s moratorium on most types of eviction ends Aug. 1, landlords will be able to take their tenants to court for not paying rent. Continue reading at The Spokesman-Review. (Tyler Tjomsland)
Seattle council members explore defunding police after calls from protesters
Seattle City Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda explained what she says defunding the police really means — an emphasis on other public safety programs. “When we talk about defunding the police, it is really about reallocating funding to areas that our community needs; housing, transit, food security, childcare. We have heard from cities like Minneapolis, Los Angeles, New York, that it can be done in a way to reduce crime to invest in public safety, and that is what I am interested in doing,” Mosqueda said. Continue reading at King 5.
