Seattle could pave the way to a national UBI
In January of this year, state Sen. Joe Nguyen, D-West Seattle, introduced legislation for a pilot that would grant 500 adults $500 a month for 18 months. Nguyen sees a guaranteed income as creating a foundation of economic stability, giving low-income people a little more clout — or freedom — in the labor market. “You shouldn’t have to take any job at any wage, any conditions of work,” he says. Wildfire smoke and COVID-19 can combine into big threat for patients
The levels of particulate matter in the air is decreasing nationally, except in the Pacific Northwest, researchers at the University of Washington have found. Their analysis predicts that most areas in the Northwest, with the exception of the Portland-Seattle corridor, show a positive growth trend in PM2.5 due to wildfires. The realities of climate change will be present for the foreseeable future. Continue reading at The Spokesman-Review. (Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency)
Food insecurity rates have more than doubled since start of COVID-19 pandemic
Since the onset of the pandemic, food insecurity rates have more than doubled in our state. That’s according to researchers at the University of Washington who have just compiled the results from their first round of a statewide survey. It was done this summer in cooperation with Washington State University and Tacoma Community College, as well as partners in local, county and state governments. Continue reading at KNKX. Latest smoke forecast. Hazardous air here to stay ‘til Friday
The air in the Tri-Cities is expected to be so smoky that it will remain hazardous through noon Friday, says the Benton Clean Air Agency. Monday was the fourth day in a row local air quality was classified as hazardous. Most Hanford workers are being told to stay home again Tuesday for a second day, with some schools that are offering limited in-person classes making similar announcements Monday afternoon. From low-income child care to remote learning: COVID-19 forces Tacoma day care to adapt
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, child care facilities like the Multicultural Child and Family Hope Center have been deemed essential by Gov. Jay Inslee, even as reduced enrollments have hurt bottom lines. With in-person instruction not happening at local schools, many child care facilities are also being forced to serve as de facto schools for children who don’t have the option to stay home, including taking on the inherent health risks. HOW CLIMATE MIGRATION WILL RESHAPE AMERICA
Once you accept that climate change is fast making large parts of the United States nearly uninhabitable, the future looks like this: With time, the bottom half of the country grows inhospitable, dangerous and hot. Something like a tenth of the people who live in the South and the Southwest — from South Carolina to Alabama to Texas to Southern California — decide to move north in search of a better economy and a more temperate environment.
