Seattle protests are barely spreading COVID-19 — so far
“Results are in from UW Medicine and out of 3,000 tests fewer than 1% were positive,” the City of Seattle’s COVID-19 website now reads. On June 14, an additional line appeared below this one, reading, “To our knowledge and based on volunteered information, there is no evidence so far of people testing positive for COVID-19 from attending protests in Seattle.” By Monday, June 15, that line had vanished. New video shows officer putting arm around Manuel Ellis’ neck, pressing knee into his body
A newly released video taken by a witness appears to show a Tacoma police officer wrap his arm around Manuel Ellis’ neck and then press a knee into Ellis’ body. The video reveals new details of the struggle that preceded Ellis’ death on a South Tacoma street the night of March 3. The case has gotten increasing attention and scrutiny amid nationwide protests decrying police brutality against Black people. Continue reading at KNKX. (Tacoma Action Collective)
LGBTQ advocates say Supreme Court ruling will reinforce Washington state protections
Legally, Monday’s Supreme Court ruling forbidding employment discrimination against LGBTQ people does not change much in Washington. The state has a law that goes much further than the court opinion, banning discrimination not only in regard to work, but housing and public accommodation, including schools and restrooms. “This is a huge victory for LGBTQ equality,” said James Esseks of the American Civil Liberties Union. He added: “The Supreme Court’s clarification that it’s unlawful to fire people because they’re LGBTQ is the result of decades of advocates fighting for our rights. The court has caught up to the majority of our country, which already knows that discriminating against LGBTQ people is both unfair and against the law.” Continue reading at The Washington Post. Report: COVID-19 cases, deaths will ‘increase substantially’ unless checked in Eastern Washington
The new data analysis comes from a situation report released by the Washington Department of Health Saturday, which shows that several parts of Eastern Washington have yet to reach their peak number of cases. The models also forecast that without additional interventions, Yakima, Spokane, Benton and Franklin counties will see more COVID-19 cases and deaths in the coming summer months. Seattle protest leaders call for defunding and dismantling police. What would that look like?
Something has changed in the conversation around police reform amid the protests that have gripped Seattle and the nation for weeks. “Reform” hardly seems the word for it anymore. The revulsion around Floyd’s killing is so strong, the loss of confidence in police so widespread, especially in their ability to root out violent racism, that many protesters are calling for police to be defunded, dismantled or abolished altogether.
