Snohomish police chief reassigned after rumors about antifa spurred armed response
The police chief of Snohomish was replaced on Monday following a week of mounting tension over how he handled a rumored but unrealized threat that antifa activists planned to riot and damage storefronts in the community. A divide in Snohomish, a city of 10,000 near the Cascade foothills, had come to light early last week as citizens armed with semi-automatic weapons and displaying a Confederate flag gathered in the city’s historic downtown. Steve Corker, left, President of the Landlord's Association of the Inland Northwest and Terri Anderson, Executive Director of the Tenants Union of Washington State, say an eviction crisis looms in Spokane money without rental assistance funding from government. (TYLER TJOMSLAND)

‘A tsunami of people in need’: Rental crisis could hit Spokane when eviction moratorium ends
Terri Anderson and Steve Corker often disagree over the role of government in matters involving renters and landlords, but a common fear has recently united them: a massive wave of evictions that could soon be coming to Spokane County. Anderson is the interim executive directors of the Tenants Union of Washington State, and Corker is president of the Landlord Association of the Inland Northwest. Together they say that when Gov. Jay Inslee’s moratorium on most types of eviction ends Aug. 1, landlords will be able to take their tenants to court for not paying rent. Continue reading at The Spokesman-Review. (Tyler Tjomsland)

Seattle council members explore defunding police after calls from protesters
Seattle City Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda explained what she says defunding the police really means — an emphasis on other public safety programs. “When we talk about defunding the police, it is really about reallocating funding to areas that our community needs; housing, transit, food security, childcare. We have heard from cities like Minneapolis, Los Angeles, New York, that it can be done in a way to reduce crime to invest in public safety, and that is what I am interested in doing,” Mosqueda said. WA’s coming budget cuts could dwarf those of the Great Recession
Preliminary numbers suggest that, over the next three years, Washington state tax revenues will come in about $7 billion lower than previously expected. The actual revenue loss may be even greater, since the estimate is based on data from early in the coronavirus pandemic, before the economy collapsed further when unemployment soared and personal spending plummeted. Protesters gather outside the County-City Building in Tacoma on Friday, demanding justice for Manuel Ellis, who was killed while in police custody March 3. His death was ruled a homicide, according to a report made public this week.

Tacoma mayor wants officers in Manuel Ellis case fired, City Council asks for state review
The family of Manuel Ellis spoke, and the Tacoma City Council listened. The council unanimously voted Friday to submit a letter to Gov. Jay Inslee, calling for a state-sanctioned independent review of Ellis’ death. Ellis died March 3 in police custody. His death was ruled a homicide, in a medical examiner’s report made public this week. The cause was lack of oxygen due to physical restraint. Continue reading at KNKX. (Parker Miles Blohm)

Attorneys for two laid-off workers are suing Washington state for delays in paying benefits while it reins in rampant unemployment fraud. Seattle police officers dressed in riot gear, left, stand in a line across 11th Street, opposite thousands of people protesting police brutality and the unjust deaths of Black Americans at the hands of law enforcement on the fifth day of protests following the violent police killing of George Floyd on Tuesday, June 2, 2020, in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle.

Why ‘defund the police’ has become the rallying cry at Seattle protests
The Seattle police budget for this year is approximately $409 million, which accounts for just over a quarter of the city’s general fund budget. Cutting it in half, as advocates have proposed, could redirect roughly $205 million toward social services addressing homelessness, mental health needs, and the economic disparities facing Black and Brown communities.
