Washington state builds coronavirus contact tracing ‘fire brigade’
If life is going to return to anything like normal in the next few months, experts say we’re going to need a lot more “contact tracers.” Those are the public health workers who get in touch with someone who’s tested positive for a disease, to find out who else he or she might have been in contact with. It’s a long-standing practice for illnesses such as tuberculosis and AIDS, and now, as states re-open, it’ll be a crucial tool for keeping a lid on the coronavirus. Continue reading at KUOW. (AP)
No one fails: School districts won’t give out Fs this year
None of the state’s 1.2 million K-12 students will earn a failing grade for the rest of the school year, state Superintendent Chris Reykdal said during a call with reporters Wednesday. Districts must assign either an incomplete grade or a letter grade better than F to high school students, according to a new policy from the state Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. States rushing to reopen are likely making a deadly error, coronavirus models and experts warn
By the end of the week, residents in Georgia will be able to get their hair permed and nails done. By Monday, they will be cleared for action flicks at the cineplex and burgers at their favorite greasy spoon. And it will almost certainly lead to more novel coronavirus infections and deaths. As several states — including South Carolina, Tennessee and Florida — rush to reopen businesses, the sudden relaxation of restrictions will supply new targets for the coronavirus that has kept the United States largely closed down, according to experts, math models and the basic rules that govern infectious diseases. Inslee says elective surgeries, outdoor recreation and some construction could restart as Washington begins to recover from coronavirus
Gov. Jay Inslee Tuesday evening announced a road map for reopening Washington’s economy that could soon allow the return of some elective surgeries, outdoor recreation and certain construction projects. In a 5 p.m. televised public address, Inslee didn’t say when the stay-at-home order — scheduled to lift at the end of the day on May 4 — might start to be rolled back. The plan would only move forward, he said, once cases of the new coronavirus have fallen enough that the state is able to manage future outbreaks. Continue reading at The Seattle Times. (Ted S. 50 Years of Earth Day: What’s Better Today, and What’s Worse
Earth Day turns 50 today. The original wave of coast-to-coast demonstrations in 1970 not only transformed American priorities, leading to landmark legislation like the Clean Air Act, but helped shape the modern global environmental movement. In the past half-century, air and water pollution have plummeted in the United States, the bald eagle is no longer endangered, and environmental laws pioneered in America have set a model for nations around the world. But since then, other threats have grown, including climate change, tropical deforestation and a staggering loss of global biodiversity. Continue reading at The New York Times. (Mathilde Aubier)
