The new sick leave law doesn’t help the workers that need it most
The Families First Coronavirus Emergency Response Act passed the Senate on March 18, and was signed into law by President Trump. The “phase 2” bill was one of the first moves by Congress in reaction to the coronavirus outbreak and aimed to extend sick leave to vulnerable U.S. workers, along with other financial benefits. Nearly a quarter of U.S. workers don’t have access to paid sick leave, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. For many of these workers, like waiters and waitresses, the federally mandated leave comes too late, as layoffs from social distancing measures have spiked. Continue reading at The Washington Post. What ‘flattening the curve’ really means, and why it’s so important in the coronavirus outbreak
Flatten the curve. That’s the rallying cry of the coronavirus pandemic. But what does that mean and why is it so important? The drastic measures put in place by Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, President Donald Trump and other government officials aren’t meant to stop the disease from spreading. They are meant to slow the spread of the coronavirus. That, in turn, buys more of a crucial resource: time. Continue reading at The Olympian. (National Institute of Health)
Washington’s lieutenant governor leaving for the priesthood
Washington Lt. Gov. Cyrus Habib said Thursday that he is not running for re-election and will join the Jesuit order of the Catholic Church to start the process of becoming a priest. Habib, the state’s first blind lieutenant governor, said the decision comes after “two years of careful and prayerful discernment.” A Democrat who has served in the position since 2017, Habib previously served in the state House and Senate. He said he understood why many constituents and supporters may be surprised and wondering why he “would trade a life of authority for one of obedience.” Continue reading at The Skagit Valley Herald. Gov. Inslee issues eviction ban as WA coronavirus deaths rise to 67
Washington state health officials reported 13 new deaths from the coronavirus on Wednesday, bringing the state tally of fatalities to 67 – the highest in the country. Also, Gov. Jay Inslee announced a 30-day statewide moratorium on evictions of residential tenants as the state continues to grapple with containing the spread of COVID-19 and the impact it is having on the state’s economy as businesses are forced to temporarily close and employees are laid off. ‘We’re Petrified’: Immigrants Afraid to Seek Medical Care for Coronavirus
The coronavirus was not on the agenda when a legal-aid group two months ago invited farmworkers who toil in the date groves, lemon orchards and vineyards of California’s Coachella Valley to an information session about immigration issues. But when Luz Gallegos and her team showed up over the weekend, they were cornered by people who peppered them with questions about the virus. On Monday, public health authorities announced the first two deaths from the virus in this part of Southern California, both in the Coachella Valley. Continue reading at The Seattle Times. Legislature tackled other issues along with COVID-19
Washington’s 2020 legislative session can be divided into two distinct parts: before cases of COVID-19 were discovered in the state, and after. Bars, gyms and more ordered closed in Washington state
All gatherings with more than 50 people will be prohibited in Washington state beginning Monday when Gov. Jay Inslee is expected to sign an emergency proclamation to help stop the spread of COVID-19. The order will not apply to restaurants, which will be able to provide take-out and delivery services, but in-person dining will be prohibited. Additionally, grocery stores and pharmacies will remain open. Continue reading at The Federal Way Mirror.
