Virus sparks prison riot, hits more WA long-term care homes
Inmates at a Washington state prison staged a large protest following new coronavirus diagnoses at the facility and and health officials say they continue to see high numbers of cases in the state’s long-term care facilities. More than 9,000 people have tested positive for COVID-19 and at least 421 have died, according to the Department of Health. Continue reading at The Yakima Herald. (Elaine Thompson)

Kaylee Tessan Joseph and her daughter, Alaina, 4, outside of their Bellevue apartment on April 6, 2020. Joseph was laid off from Applebee’s because of COVID-19. She applied for unemployment and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to help while she is out of work. SNAP applications have gone up 105% in recent weeks. Along with unemployment applications going up as people are losing work, three safety net benefits (TANF, SNAP and HEN) have seen big jumps in applications as many families already on the margins prepare for a longer-term struggle. Housing, food, cash: Requests for help double in WA amid pandemic
When Kaylee Tessan Joseph started losing hours at her job last month, she knew she needed a backup plan. Joseph’s full-time position as an Applebee’s server in Bellevue became part-time when customers stopped showing up and then evaporated completely after Gov. Jay Inslee closed bars and restaurants to contain the coronavirus’ spread. Continue reading at Crosscut. (Dorothy Edwards)

The Technology 202: MIT researchers unveil effort to trace spread of the coronavirus
Researchers want to use the same technology that powers Find My iPhone to alert you if you’ve come into contact with someone who has tested positive for the novel coronavirus. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology-led effort would allow infected people to volunteer to upload a log of their recent Bluetooth signals to a database. Other people would then be able to scan that database and see if they crossed paths with an infected person. They would also receive a notification alerting them they were exposed. Inslee vetoes millions in spending
Gov. Jay Inslee has vetoed hundreds of millions of dollars in spending in hopes of making a dent in the loss of state revenues as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to keep the state’s economy largely shut down. Inslee vetoed on Friday nearly two dozen bills in their entirety, as well as more than 140 separate budget items in the $53.4 billion state supplemental budget passed by the Legislature last month. Undocumented workers among those hit first — and worst — by the coronavirus shutdown
Evilin Cano was dismantling a rooftop skating rink in Manhattan’s Seaport district when her construction crew was notified that the venue would be closing, along with much of New York — and that she would be out of a job. The next night, the 33-year-old undocumented day laborer from Guatemala fell ill with a fever. Her head pounded. Her throat hurt. She could not stop coughing or vomiting. And she was short of breath. She does not know whether she has covid-19 because three hospitals told her not to bother coming in for testing unless she’s gasping for air. Continue reading at The Washington Post. (Jeenah Moon)

Cost of insulin capped while state studies reason for inflation
Health insurance plans will have to limit a person’s out-of-pocket costs for a month’s supply of insulin to $100, under a bill signed by Gov. Jay Inslee on Friday. “Some people have paid upward of $2,000 for a monthly supply of insulin,” said Rep. Jacquelin Maycumber, R-Republic, the bill’s sponsor. “When this is a life-saving drug, we need to know why this cost is going up so much.” Continue reading at The Spokesman-Review. (Jim Camden)
